Water conservation, utility and management are also critical components to the
health, economic and environmental fabrics of a community. As former United
Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan states, the natural resource base is under
siege. Poor water management degrades and squanders a precious resource,
and this is directly linked to the urbanization of poverty. Providing education
tailored to a community’s needs is imperative. Aqua-Africa conducts a “prior
needs” study in each community it serves. The information collected is used
to train 2-5 individuals in the community to administer community teaching.
This approach, in combination with the utility provisions provided by water
committees, will help facilitate communication and enforce high standards.
